Selling DVDs on eBay can indeed be a very lucrative business endeavor. However, many DVD sellers go belly up within the first year. Is it a simple matter of the luck of the draw? Absolutely not. Almost every DVD seller that's failed on eBay has done so due to common selling mistakes. If you want to maximize your chances of eBay success, these are some things you need to avoid.

#1 - Unprofessional Auction Listings

If your eBay auctions look as though they were created by a fifth grader, the number of bids you receive on your auctions are not going to be nearly as much as they could be if your auction listing have a professional appearance. Do yourself a favor and make sure your auction listings look great and read well. This means using a professional auction template filled with quality images and well-written content that is free of grammatical errors and typos.

#2 - Underestimating Overhead Costs

If you're not making enough money off of each DVD to cover your overhead, you're going to be losing money instead of making it. Some sellers have made the mistake of underestimating overhead costs when figuring out how much to charge for a DVD. When calculating your overhead costs, don't forget to figure in listing fees, final value fees and the cost of shipping and shipping supplies. Only once these expenses have been covered can you start profiting from your DVD sales.

#3 - Falling Behind On Shipping

Once you start selling hundreds of DVDs a week, you're going to have to hone up on your time management skills. It's critical that each DVD gets shipped out in a timely manner. Nothing will irritate and upset your customers more than having to wait a long time for their DVD to arrive. Once you let yourself fall behind, it can be almost impossible to catch up. To avoid this problem, don't let yourself fall behind in the first place.

#4 - Not Focusing on Repeat Sales

Even though your winning bidders are technically eBay visitors and not exclusive customers, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to develop a business relationship with them. Many eBay bidders have been known to develop loyalty to one eBay seller over another. If you want your eBay customers to be loyal to you, send them email newsletters and one-dollar discount coupons to keep them coming back. By enticing previous customers to check out your current auctions, your auction items will receive a higher number of bids. The more bids you have on an item, the more money you'll make.

#5 - Poor Customer Service

Even if you don't ever plan on doing business with a customer again, you should never give rude or unprofessional customer service. After all, they can leave you negative feedback and if more than a couple eBay bidders leave feedback complaining about your rude and unprofessional behavior, it's going to cost you some business. Treat everyone with respect and make a good name for yourself and your eBay business.
