How can I build an automated system for my ebay business?

09 August 2007

Question: Guess what, I'm glad to purchase your Wholesale Directory. Considering that I'm determined to make this path a success, thus seeking your wisdom of experience. My First question:

You mentioned in your hype report in Myth #2 Make Big Money from a Few Sales Each Week' that this is a volume business and thus for increasing your sale per week you have put together a 'Automated System' (from listing to shipping) which may automate 90% of this tasks.

I have a system in place that automates a lot of my ebay auction management. It isn't something I put in place overnight. It was built piece by piece as my business has grown. I wouldn't recommend a new seller put the complete system in place. As you need more automation, consider adding another piece.

1. For the process of posting auctions, I use a piece of software called Auctiva Poster. There is a free version that was released a couple of years ago. I tried it and it didn't provide the functionality I was used to in the Classic Edition.

If you relist the same dvd titles every week, this software will let you do the work once. Once you save an auction listing, you can relist it over and over with the push of a button. It also features the ability to group your items in batches and schedule listings. Once a week, I open my batch, choose the times I want it to run, and everyday the program will list my 1000s of ebay auctions. This is a must have tool for anyone starting an ebay business.

2. For my post auction management tasks I use a software offered by ebay called Seller Manger Pro. It automatically emails all my winning bidders with payment instructions and provides an easy to use interface to manage my payments. This is also another auction management software I would recommend even for new sellers.

3. I use another free software provided by ebay called Ebay Accounting Assistant. I wouldn't recommend it for the new seller. It is for high volume sellers that want a way to automatically import paypal payments into Quickbooks Accounting Software.

4. I use another software called Platinum Shipper provided by Endicia. This software allows me to print postage from my PC and automates the task of linking my customer files from Quickbooks.

For most new sellers, I would recommend Auctiva Poster and Seller Manger Pro. The other software packages can require expensive hardware and you really shouldn't even consider adding them until you are selling 300+ titles a week.

Why did Ebay remove my dvd auctions for copyright infringement?

06 August 2007

Question: Hi Brent, thank you for offering the results of your hard work at such a decent price. Just looking it over for the last couple of hours proves it to be worth much more. There is one question I hope you can answer for me. I recently tried to list DVD's on eBay and twice they removed about 25% of the listings they said for reasons of copyright infringement. The first time I listed the DVD's I used pics and descriptions of the internet (blockbuster, amazon, ...). After they removed the listings the first time I took pics myself of the actual DVD and didn't write any description other than the stars and directors and such, and they still removed them. Do you have that trouble? How do I list them without having them removed? Thanks for any help.

Chances are there isn't a problem with the pic or description provided by the studio. The problem is most likely a word or words you are using in the auctions that leads ebay to believe these items are bootleg dvds. If you purchased them from a dvd distributor that advertised them as imports, dvd-5, dvd9, or sold them without the case, chances are good that ebay is correct in removing them.

Some of the bootleg dvds are so sophisticated that they look identical to the legitimate factory dvds. There are a few giveaways that is usually an indication that a dvd supplier is selling bootlegs.

1. If the product is advertised as Region 5, DVD9, or DVD-5, then I would be very suspicious of the copies I were getting. These are code words used to describe bootleg movies.

2. Bootlegs are usually sold without the cases. They often come in clear plastic sleeves.

3. Bootleg dvds usually do not have the special features. The dvds are not the normal capacity as a factory dvd and do not have the room to hold them.

4. Bootleg dvds sometimes have low quality printing and sometimes have Asian writing on them.

If you purchase dvds that fit any of these descriptions, you should question if the dvds are legitimate factory copies or bootlegs.

Which dvd wholesale distributors will offer HD-DVD and Blu-Ray dvds?

06 August 2007

Question: Just a quick question... of all the distributors, which of these offer HiDef Media (HD-DVD, Blu-Ray)?

The best rule of thumb I can give, if you can find it at Wal-mart, Best Buy, or another big box store, the top two wholesale dvd distributors on my list will have it as well. This includes box sets, tv series, and HiDef Dvds.

Should I just keep relisting my ebay auctions that don’t sell?

06 August 2007

Question: Great information. I did my homework and researched the companies that you said. I see that they all had a ton of auctions ending on Aug. 2nd. All three did. And all had alot that didnt sell. Do they just keep relisting until they sell? Just wondering.

I can't tell you exactly what any specific seller does to manage their auction listings. I can only tell you what has worked for me.

These sellers list tens and sometimes hundreds of thousands of auctions each month. They have several thousand titles that they list multiple times each month. I try to be much more selective in the titles I list. I don't have a title list of several thousand titles. I have a list of 300 - 500 titles that I am constantly refining. I only want the best sellers.

If I have a title that doesn't sell, I usually take advantage of the free relisting credit that ebay offers on unsold auctions. If I still don't sell it, I'll usually hold on to it for a few weeks and then try again. If I still don't have any luck, I'll remove it from my "dvds to buy list" and include it in a wholesale auction that I run on ebay.

Can someone who lives in another country get a business license?

06 August 2007

Question: Hi Brent. I was looking through your information and I just have one
question for you and that has to do with the Business License.

Can someone who lives in another country get this business license? If
they can how do they go about getting it.

I can't say for sure what type of business licenses are available in your country. My list is primarily for those located in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. From my understanding, the process for getting a business license in these countries is similar. If you live outside of these areas chances are my dvd wholesale list will not be of much help to you anyway.

Is there a rule of thumb on how much to pay per DVD for wholesale lots on Ebay?

06 August 2007

Question: Is there a rule of thumb on how much to pay per DVD for wholesale lots on Ebay? I want to resell the DVDs on Half.com or Ebay. I know I could pick and choose from the lot and resell the lot of slow sellers or less desirables. However, is there a good measure as to how much to pay per video in these wholesale lots? I also noticed that shipping for lots varies considerably. Some folks have shipping for free and others want an arm and a leg. I know that you have to take the shipping cost into consideration in your pricing. I welcome your response.

You are correct. You absolutely have to consider the shipping costs for your wholesale lots. I am amazed at the number of people that don't take this into consideration. It is a must.

There is no rule of thumb for how much to pay per dvd. It all depends on the titles you are getting. I once paid $7 each for a wholesale lot of 500 dvds on ebay. I was able to double my money on this lot because it contained mostly box sets and tv series. It turned out to be a great deal.

In most cases, I never spend that much for used dvds. But once again, it is all about the titles and takes a little time to learn. The best advice I can give to a new buyer is spend time researching what used titles are selling for. It should be fairly evident which titles are going to be good sellers.

Another thing new buyers should be aware of are filler titles. If you buy a wholesale lot on Ebay make sure the seller names every single title you are getting. If they don't, don't buy it. If a seller only takes the time to name a few titles then you can be sure those are going to be the best titles in the lot. The other titles are probably worth less than $1 each and are known as filler titles.

Is the dvd market saturated on Ebay?

01 August 2007

Question: Thanks for the info. Very impressive. I keep reading the the DVD market is getting saturated on Ebay. Is that true or can someone make a decent living doing this yet through the distributors you listed?

I frequently get emails from new sellers asking, "Is there room for me to compete and be profitable selling cds and/or dvds on ebay?"

There is a lot of worry that the market maybe to saturated for a new seller to be profitable selling dvds on ebay. If the market is truely saturated, it is only evidence that selling dvds on ebay is a profitable niche. If it weren't, there wouldn't be so many sellers setting up shop.

In my opinion, a saturated market will correct itself. Once prices are pushed so low that sellers can no longer make a profit, you'll see a max exodous of sellers moving into other niches or giving up ebay for another venture.

I believe the dvd market on ebay is still strong. In March 2007, there were nearly 11 millon dollars of dvds sold on ebay. This only includes dvds sold individually and doesn't count large wholesale lots offered on the site. This number will only increase as Christmas approaches.

Another encouraging example is a seller named Moviemarz. It is the classic David and Goliath story. For many years, a seller named Glacierbaydvd was the top dvd seller on ebay. This seller's business was featured in books, auction sites, magazines, and newspapers. He had an ebay account rep dedicated to his business and even boasts he dined with Ebay CEO Meg Whitman. I didn't include a link to Glacierbaydvd because the ebay account no longer exists.

In May of 2004, Moviemarz setup a new ebay account. This new seller with no prior dvd sales and no feedback soon proved he was a force to be reckoned with. Very quickly, Glacierbaydvd began seeing a drop in sales. This seller went from selling an average of 22,000 dvds a month to less than 7,000. After more than a year of hanging on it became clear glacierbaydvd was not going to make it.

This seller's feedback page quickly filled up with negative feedback, because they were no longer able to fulfill orders. It didn't take long before ebay suspended this seller. Today, Moviemarz has over 700,000 positive feedback proving a new seller can be profitable and compete with the big sellers.

Will your cd and dvd wholesale suppliers ship to Canada?

01 August 2007

Question: Will the cd and dvd suppliers in your wholesale list ship to Canada?

There are over 120 suppliers in my list. I haven't used all of them and even if I did, I wouldn't try to comment on the policies and requirements of each one. Will the U.S. wholesalers in my list ship to Canada? The easy answer is some will and some want.

My list contains a few wholesalers located in Canada. One of these wholesalers is the top DVD reseller for the Canadian market. I've had several customers located in Canada that have used this wholesaler with success.

Is it best to sell my wholesale dvds in lots or individually?

01 August 2007

Question: Based on your own eBay selling experience, would you say that DVDs sold in "lots" tend to sell better than titles sold individually? I've noticed many lots - from 5 to 200 discs in size - listed, and most have gotten bids. Any thoughts on this?

If you take a look at two of the top cd and dvd sellers Jayandmarie and Moviemarz this should provide some direction. Every top seller I have researched offers titles individually. It takes more time, but I believe it is the most profitable way to run this business.

The only exception I make is when I have titles that are hard to sell. No matter how much you research titles, you are alway going to have some titles that turn out to be duds. When this happens, I usually bundle 5 - 20 of them together and offer them in one lot. In my experience, this usually results in a loss. But it is a great way to free up hard to sell items and clean up your inventory.
